Check out the outdoor skating rinks near you! Bellevue Ice Rink and Snohomish Valley Golf Center are both offering ice skating throughout the winter season. Canalis – Dine in A Yurt

We have watched many restaurants and pubs turn to outdoor tent seating and have enjoyed how creative the small Seattle businesses have been to accommodate their loyal customers. Canalis offers something a bit different – Fine Dining in a Yurt! You can book your spot online and enjoy a unique ambience with your loved ones.

Drive-in Theatre

Since the indoor cinema’s have been on hold here in Washington, the drive-in movie theaters have been thriving during winter months when they are typically closed. Oak Harbor, Port Townsend, and Gorst all feature drive-in cinemas open during the pandemic. There have been some pop-up outdoor showings in Seattle and Everett as well.

Outdoor Mini Golf

Located in Sequim, Olympic Game Farm is a fun one-day round trip drive from Seattle.

Students at UW and all over the country are being asked to evacuate their dorm rooms and their classes have been suspended or moved to online instruction. The state of Washington has also decided to temporarily shut down K-12 schools, which will keep even more workers at home. How to Pack A Storage Unit

If you are renting self-storage soon, you will need to know how to pack a storage unit so that you maximize the space and keep your most used belongings where you can find them. Organizing a storage space takes a little bit of pre-planning, but will pay off every time you visit your belongings. First, if you are looking for storage then please check out our storage finder to find affordable rates on units near you. You can also check out our storage size calculator to figure out what size storage unit you will be needing to rent. If you want just enough space for your items, then rent a unit based on the recommended square footage. If you want to leave room for a walkway between items, then get a little larger unit than suggested.

How to Pack A Storage Unit

LABEL AND PACKING CHECK

If you used our Packing Guide to properly pack and label your stuff, then you should be good to go! If you have already packed your items, make sure that they are packed tightly so that they won’t shift during the move. Double check that all your boxes are securely taped and that your furniture is covered in plastic or blankets for protection. Your appliances are defrosted and drained. Your flammable materials and gasoline have been discarded, as they are unsafe to store.

PLAN YOUR LAYOUT

Just like you would design a living room space, you want to pre-plan your storage space. Before you pack a storage unit, you want to make sure to pick the right size and then imagine where you want your items for accessibility. If you won’t need access to the furniture but will need access to a few boxes, then plan on placing the furniture in first, and the boxes you need last so that they are near the front. You can imagine a walkway ahead of time, and use painters tape to keep yourself from filling up space you will want to access later. You may also want to consider shelving to organize the space! Many of our storage facilities offer Free Shelving Set-up.

UTILIZE THE SPACE

Sturdy and heavy items should be placed in the storage unit first, so that lighter and more delicate items can be placed on top of them. Place your furniture on its side so that you are stacking up and not out. Most of our storage spaces have extra tall ceilings so that you can utilize the space to stack up. You can also use the furniture you already have to build shelving and place boxes in dresser drawers as well. If you think of how you can utilize your furniture to stack and store your boxes ahead of time, then it can save you space later. You can keep books in your dryer, or art supplies in your dresser. Totally your call!

CONSIDER SAFETY

You don’t want there to be any bad smells or mold development when you return to your things. Be sure to crack your refrigerators, freezers, and washers so that they stay dry and aired out. Make sure nothing is put in storage damp, as it will mildew later. Take special care to lift items by bending your knees and not your back. Stack items very carefully, and don’t try to balance anything. Make sure that everything is extremely secure so you can feel confident that nothing will topple over later.

If you are looking for how to pack for storage, we have the best tips for you to organize your things so they are easily accessible and well secured. Making sure you have a good plan will make the process easier and quicker, so that you can have a stress-free packing and storing experience. We have created the ultimate guide to packing so that you can be ready to go when it’s time to move your stuff out.

INVENTORY YOUR THINGS

Make a list of everything you are packing in self-storage so that you know exactly what you have. This makes it easy to recall what you have in your storage unit as well as prepare you for any natural disasters that would require you to make an insurance claim. Write down the estimated value of each item that you would desire to receive compensation for in the event of a claim.

ORGANIZE EVERYTHING

You will want to pack your items for easy accessibility. Grouping similar items together will help you find your things later, as well as make labeling easy. The better organized your items are in piles will make the packing process go by faster.

PURCHASE BOXES AND SUPPLIES

Once you have organized everything and have a good idea of how much you have, you can purchase discounted boxes and supplies at any one of our storage locations. Use our storage finder to locate a store near you. Use large boxes for extremely light items such as stuffed animals, medium boxes for average items, and small boxes for heavy items. FILL THE SPACE

Use the bubble wrap if you have to fill empty space and make sure your breakables are completely padded. You can put small loose items inside smaller clear containers found at the dollar store to keep the boxes organized.

SECURE IT

Rather than layering the cardboard flaps to close, use packing tape instead. The weight of the items during the move will cause stress on the cardboard if it isn’t secured properly. Without tape, you run the risk of all the items falling out the bottom and not stacking properly in your storage unit. Secure the center, bottom and all sides with tape and double tape if needed.

LABEL IT

You will need some heavy markers, as pen is not thick enough to properly label the boxes. If you will be moving your things back into a house eventually, label them by room (kitchen, dining room, Jakes Room, etc). Otherwise, you can label them by the main items enclosed (Pictures, Antiques, etc) Make sure you label all sides of the boxes, so that you can read them regardless of the way they get stacked and stored away.

COVER YOUR LARGE ITEMS

Keep mattresses and furniture clean by covering them with plastic, blankets, or sheets. This will also help protect your furniture from getting scratched and damaged during the move. Then when you go to retrieve your items, they won’t have accumulated dust.

PREPARE YOUR APPLIANCES

Defrost your fridge and freezers completely to avoid unexpected melting, potentially causing water damage to your other belongings. Drain your washer and dishwasher of all liquids and wipe all appliances down thoroughly to keep the rest of your items dry and free from mildew. Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors slightly ajar when storing to keep them aired out.

REMOVE HAZARDS

Empty any gas cans, as well as gas being held in your lawn mower and other machinery. Gasoline is hazardous as it can catch on fire, and you never want to store it inside a storage unit. Make sure that you are not storing anything that could catch fire from extreme flammability so that your items stay safe and secure.
