Size Guide

Not sure how much space you need? Every move is different, but the guide below is a reliable starting point. Work through the four steps, then match your list to a unit size. When in doubt, call the facility nearest you; our managers size units every day and will get you into the right one the first time.

List what's going in boxes

Write down everything that can be boxed, and roughly what size box it needs. Note the items that won't fit in a box at all.

List what isn't

Furniture, appliances, mattresses, bikes, and anything awkwardly shaped. These set the footprint of your unit more than the boxes do.

Count it up

Tally the boxes by size and count the large pieces. A quick number for each is enough.

Match it to a size

Use the size breakdown below. If your list lands between two sizes, choose the larger one; a little walking room makes it easier to get to your things later.

Small - Great for boxes and small items.

This storage unit is small but mighty! Small units are about the size of a walk-in closet and great for holding household clutter, small furniture, and seasonal items.

5' x 5' (25 sq ft)

About the size of a walk-in closet. Holds the contents of a hall closet or a small bedroom's worth of boxes, plus a chair or a small dresser. Great for: seasonal decorations, camping and garden gear, business files, off-season clothing, a bike.

5' x 10' (50 sq ft)

About the size of a large garden shed. Holds a studio apartment or one full bedroom: a mattress set, a dresser, a nightstand, and a stack of boxes. Great for: a bedroom set, a sofa or loveseat, a small appliance, business inventory.

Medium - Typically holds 3 rooms of furniture plus boxes.

This storage unit is not too big, not too small, but just right for bulky furniture or equipment. Medium units are about the size of half of a standard garage and can usually fit the contents of a one-bedroom home.

10' x 10' (100 sq ft)

About half of a standard one-car garage. Holds the contents of a one-bedroom apartment: living room and bedroom furniture, a few appliances, and the boxes that go with them. Great for: sofas and armchairs, a dining set, a washer and dryer, boxes stacked to the ceiling.

10' x 15' (150 sq ft)

About the size of a large bedroom. Holds a two-bedroom home, or a one-bedroom home plus a home office or garage full of gear. Great for: full bedroom sets, large appliances, patio furniture, business stock and shelving.

Large - Typically holds 5 rooms of furniture plus boxes.

If you're in between moves, staging your home for selling, or planning a big remodel, this storage unit might be the one for you. Large units are about the size of a small garage and can fit the contents of a three- or four-bedroom home.

10' x 20' (200 sq ft)

About the size of a one-car garage. Holds a three- or four-bedroom house: every room's furniture, the appliances, and the boxes. Great for: whole-house moves, home staging, a remodel, or a small vehicle alongside boxes.

10' x 25' (250 sq ft)

A one-car garage with room to spare. Holds a four-bedroom house with space left to walk the aisle, or a vehicle plus a full apartment's worth of belongings. Great for: larger homes, contractors' tools and materials, a car or small boat with household items.

Mailbox storage units for small items and documents
